Chapter Eleven

After Terrin had deposited me back in my suite of rooms, promising to see me again at the dinner he had planned for the princesses, I was floating.

“Kat?” Marie stood up out of the seat she’d been occupying, her embroidery flying off her lap and onto the floor. “Are you alright? Where did His Highness take you?”

I leaned back against the wall next to the closed door, my legs no longer interested in supporting me. Giddy, I couldn’t help but smile stupidly. “I’m very alright. Terrin…he kissed me.”

“No,” Marie gasped. She covered her mouth with her hands. “All the gods, Kat, tell me everything.”

I giggled and tipped my head back against the wall, replaying the kiss in my mind. “It was everything I thought it would be. Like everything I’ve ever read about in books. Far better than that time I kissed the stable hand on a dare from Brienna.”

My experience with men was so vanishingly limited that it almost didn’t exist. I had been expected to remain completely chaste, unlike my brothers who had grown up carrying on dalliance after dalliance with nobles in the court and other visiting royals. But it had been worth it, for this to be my first.

“Where were you? What was it like?” Marie came closer and touched her fingers to my lips, like they’d be different now that Terrin had claimed them.

Luckily, Marie was distracted enough with the description of how he’d cupped my face in his hands and pressed his lips to mine, our bodies drawing together and his tongue sweeping into my mouth, filling me with the taste of citrus and spiced wine and something uniquely Terrin.

Because it was Marie, I even admitted how hard it had been to draw away when his hand had slid down to the back of my neck, and then how his thumb had caressed my collarbone, moving down to slip underneath the edge of my bodice.

It had been very, very difficult to pull back after that, especially with the heat in his gaze as I drew away.

“Do you think this changes things?” Marie fiddled with the necklace she was wearing, her eyes wide. “Do you think it changes the tournament? And the chance that you would win?”

The question punctured my giddy mood. I’d been able to blissfully ignore my own potential death for the hours I’d been in Terrin’s presence. Perhaps Marie was right—perhaps Terrin did favor me and would be looking for ways in which to help me through the next tasks. But it was also possible, I realized with a souring in my stomach, that he was just like many of the other men I’d met—easy with
